Style Feature: The Evolution of the Caftan

The Forever Piece

The Caftan has long adorned women of the world in assorted shapes, sizes and styles. With several doses of reinvention across time since its illusive premiere in the late 60s with Tabitha Getty from atop a Moroccan rooftop, the caftan has become a piece of self-expressive art. From exquisite silks, bright colours and geometric prints paired by many with elaborate and oversized accessories – while in rare occasions given a finesse polish with subtle jewellery. The evolution of the caftan spearheaded by historic women from the likes of Elizabeth Taylor to Bridget Bardot, presently donned by style setters of the new world, The Olsen Twins, Nicole Richie and fashion mogul, Rachel Zoe.

I will never forget the first time I went to St. Tropez with my parents and the most glamorous women all wore caftans. A caftan is always chic and effortless – it’s a trend that began in the 1960s and has transcended time. Wear it on the beach with gladiator flat sandals or to a black tie affair with tons of jewels and a topknot! —Rachel Zoe
